The Complete No-Nonsense Packing Guide for Southeast Asia

This post contains a complete no-nonsense packing guide for Southeast Asia.

packing guide for Southeast Asia

It can be difficult to know what to pack before you set off on your travelling adventure.

I would spend hours watching YouTube videos and reading posts detailing what to bring and essential items that you cannot survive in Southeast Asia without.

Although the content was very useful, I became even more confused and overwhelmed with all the information I’d just consumed.

Looking back I definitely overpacked and bought items that I DIDN’T TOUCH ONCE during the entire 6 months of my first stint in SE Asia.

And so I present ‘The Complete Packing Guide for Southeast Asia‘.

This guide aims to take the confusion out of the packing experience. It will serve you as a ‘one-stop shop‘ that will mean you’re prepared for your journey without taking unnecessary items along the way!

For ease, I have categorised the list into 5 key sections: important items, clothing, toiletries, technology, and miscellaneous.

In some sections, I will offer ‘optional‘ recommendations. This will mean that I don’t consider the items essential but may enhance your overseas travels.

The Complete No-Nonsense Packing Guide for Southeast Asia

My Top Packing HACK

Packing cubes!

If you take anything away from this packing guide, please let it be this.

Other travellers (and my boyfriend) watched me with envy when I could easily and neatly pack my clothes into smaller compartments and store them with organisation into my travel bag.

I’ll never travel without packing cubes. I would have lost so many more things (and I’m a forgetful girl) and the dread of fitting everything into my large bag would have been greater if it wasn’t for these packing cubes!

I have linked a perfect set from Amazon (which even comes with a toothbrush cup)- they’re too affordable and not to mention life-changing to go without!

Important Items

As you’ve probably guessed by the headline, this section is important. If you leave anything behind don’t let it be one of the following:

1. Passport

This goes without saying!

2. Phone:

Preferably with a good camera so those travelling piccies look fab!

3. Purse/wallet

Make sure this has lots of space for coins (you’ll be using cash a lot of the time in Southeast Asia).

4. Overseas bank card

Try find a card that doesn’t charge you for making purchases abroad. You’ll be withdrawing cash quite often so look out for no withdrawal fees and a high monthly withdrawal limit too.

Check out this recent article comparing the best travel cards in 2024.

5. A spare bank card:

So many people lose their bank cards while travelling. It’s always good to have a backup in case of an emergency!

6. Wallet for all your important travel documents

This keeps all your important items in one place and easy to find. Read my travel insurance guide if you need help finding the best policy for you!

7. Your first destination’s local currency

Having the currency of the first country you visit on you takes away the stress when you first arrive!

Clothing

I’m guilty of overpacking, especially on my first trip to Southeast Asia. Use this advice to avoid making the same mistakes that I did!

There will be many laundry service options at hostels in popular towns and cities that you’ll visit so you may not need as much as you think. However, if you’re heading into more remote areas it may be worth packing extra underwear just in case.

Southeast Asia is HOT and it can get very sticky depending on the time of year that you go.

When packing, think of lightweight, loose, and flowy pieces so that you feel as comfortable as possible in these humid conditions.

Here’s some ideas of what exactly to pack:

1. Underwear

Pack enough for 7-10 days of wear.

2. Socks

I recommend packing 5 pairs (you’ll be wearing flip-flops or sandals most of the time anyway).

3. Tops

The great thing about travel tops is that they’re often small so you can load up on a good few strappy tops (I took around 8).

Take a couple of T-shirts for days you want to feel more comfortable or protect yourself from the sun.

I often stole my boyfriend’s short-sleeved shirt as a cute way to cover up a little more. I wore it so much so would definitely recommend packing a lightweight or linen shirt!

4. Bottoms

Take a pair of shorts for the daytime and a pair of comfier shorts for when you’re chilling around the hostel.

I also took a couple of skirts since these didn’t take up much space in my bag.

I’d also advise packing one pair of leggings. It can get cold on some sleeper buses/ trains and especially when you fly!

5. Dresses

Pack a couple of day dresses, it’s nice to occasionally put on a dress (plus these look cute for travelling pics).

6. Bikinis

You’ll be LIVING in these. You’ll be visiting loads of breathtaking waterfalls and relaxing on so many beaches that you’ll lose count!

Bikinis and other swimwear is so small and easy to pack so I would honestly advise bringing 4/5 sets.

7. Sportswear

If you want to work out while away then take a couple of sets of lightweight sportswear.

8. Temple wear

You’ll need to make sure that you can cover your shoulders and knees before entering one of these sacred establishments. Bring a long flowy skirt and a T-shirt to dress appropriately.

Don’t stress too much about this one since many Temples allow you to rent or buy sarongs from the entrance.

You can also purchase a sarong with beautiful patterns (or get your hands on the classic ‘elephant travelling pants’) at local markets.

9. Nightwear

Pack some lightweight PJs or in all honesty sleep in one of your oversized baggy T-shirts like me- it saves space after all!

10. Waterproof jacket

You may occasionally experience showers (or a storm if you’re visiting during a monsoon season) so be sure to bring a waterproof jacket. These also double up nicely as blankets on sleeper buses!

11. Trainers

Bring a pair that you won’t mind getting dirty since you’re likely to go on a few treks while out there! You’ll be walking A LOT exploring different islands, jungles, and cities so make sure the trainers you bring are comfortable.

12. Sandals

You’ll need a good durable pair that can sustain your adventures. My friend wore Reiker sandals which looked so cute with all her outfits!

Side note: If you forget anything then do not worry! You’ll find markets and shops across Southeast Asia where you can buy lots of items for super cheap!

Toiletries

1. Shampoo, Conditioner and Body Wash

Although these are easy to find at local 7-Elevens or Family Marts, it’s always nice to feel prepared!

Depending on how long you are planning to travel, you may want to bring some travel bottles to fill with your favourite toiletries.

This set from Amazon is a great way to stay organised and keep everything together with all the packing and unpacking that you’ll be doing.

Better yet, take shampoo and conditioner bars! These take up less space, are more sustainable, and last forever, saving you money in the long run.

You could also try out the latest eco-friendly hair care solution for travel lovers: powder shampoo.

Unlike dry shampoo, this water-activated product actually cleans your hair and is perfect for those looking to pack light. If you’re an eco-conscious backpacker, I cannot recommend The Powder Shampoo’s products enough!

2. Face Cleanser

You’ll get hot and sweaty every day- this is an absolute must!

3. Moisturiser

HUGE TIP INCOMING… bring enough moisturiser for your face and body for the entire duration of your trip.

Most moisturisers in Southeast Asia contain ‘lightening agents’ which essentially bleach your skin which you’ll likely want to avoid. Therefore stock up on your favourite moisturiser before you go!

4. Toothbrush and Toothpaste

I took a super handy portable toothbrush that allowed me to keep it covered and clean when packed.

5. Deodorant

Another absolute essential!

I’ve recently switched to using natural deodorants to reduce the amount of chemicals and metals I’m applying to my skin (I’ll write a full post on my experience later).

I’ve been loving the Ku.tis Natural Deodorant. I have the grapefruit and mandarin scent and it smells INCREDIBLE. So far it’s been working well in hot conditions too!

6. Sun Cream

The sun is strong in this area of the world. Pack a good sun cream with at least 30 SPF to protect you from those harmful UVA and UVB rays.

7. Makeup

Bring minimal makeup! It’ll be too hot to wear a heavy face of makeup daily. If you want a little more coverage, opt for a lightweight foundation instead.

For nights out I mainly just wore concealer, mascara, and lip balm!

8. Medication

Keep some ibuprofen and paracetamol on you AT ALL TIMES.

I made this mistake and ended up getting seriously ill on a small remote island Huay Xai located between Thailand and mainland Laos. There was no pharmacy on this island and I had to persevere with an excruciating migraine until we reached the mainland the next day.

Please learn from my mistake and take painkillers EVERYWHERE. You’ll never know when you’ll need them.

If you take prescription medication, bring enough more than enough supply to last your entire trip. Get an emailed letter from your doctor stating the prescription you are carrying to avoid any funny business while crossing country borders. Print out a spare copy too just in case!

Other medications I would recommend packing are Immodium (for those inevitable travel tummy scenarios) and Antisan Bite and Sting cream (my true knight in shining armour when travelling).

9. First Aid

Take the basics just in case. I’d recommend packing plasters and some wound-cleansing wipes at the very least.

Technology

1. Headphones/ earphones

These are a MUST for long journeys. I used these to watch films/ TV shows and listen to podcasts and audiobooks.

I purchased some more affordable JBL Bluetooth earphones for my travels so I didn’t risk losing my AirPods.

The sound quality of these earphones is great! They also don’t leak any sound which is perfect for not disturbing any other passengers.

2. Laptop/tablet (optional)

I wanted to do some work while traveling so I took my laptop with me. My boyfriend bought his iPad which was great for watching downloaded films and TV shows on buses and trains.

3. Kindle app (optional)

I read so many books while away but this would not have been possible without an online book subscription.

It takes up too much room to pack physical books but that doesn’t mean the reading plans have to go down the drain!

Kindle Unlimited allows you download an ultimate amount of books from all genres that you can read on their free app.

The monthly subscription is only £9.49! This is INSANE considering this is less than the price of just one physical book.

Miscellaneous

1. Travel adapter

This is great if you’re planning to go to several countries. It gives you peace of mind that you will not have to go with a dead battery for long which can be worrying when solo travelling.

This is the travel adapter I used.

2. Sleeping mask

My friends bought this as a departing gift I will be forever grateful to them!

Sleeping masks are an ESSENTIAL for long bus journeys- they can help improve the quality of your sleep meaning you feel better rested for the day ahead!

This silk sleeping mask is similar to the one my friends bought me and it comes with free earplugs too!

3. Day bag

Pickpocketing is prevalent in this region so make sure your bag has secure fastenings to reduce the risk of this happening to you!

Online there are various ‘anti-theft bags‘ that I recommend you take a look at. These are designed with ‘anti-theft pockets’ that help to make your valuables difficult to reach.

4. Sunglasses

Got to keep those eyes healthy!

5. Bucket hat

In all honesty, I just think they look cute.

6. Hairbrush

Take a smaller hair brush to save space. It’ll fit in your day bag too!

7. Hair ties/ claw clip

If you have long hair then be sure to bring lots of hair ties and a claw clip to keep you cool.

8. Travel razor

I packed this Gillette Venus travel razor. It fitted so easily and safely into my bag!

9. Microfibre towel

This would not be a serious packing guide without including a microfibre towel.

It is a traveller’s MUST for saving space and can easily be packed into your travel bag.

10. Travel Bed Sheet Protector (optional)

I only used this a handful of times because the majority of places that I stayed were beautifully clean so there was no need!

However, if you’re concerned about the cleanliness of where you are sleeping and want some extra protection from any insects then bring a travel bed sheet protector!
