The Powder Shampoo: Your Must-Have Sustainable Travel Product

This post contains my honest review of products from The Powder Shampoo company. Check out the exclusive 10% discount code below created for all of The Travelling Wellness Girl’s readers!

the powder shampoo review

Have you heard about the new kid on the block? If not, let me introduce you to the latest innovation in hair care: powder shampoo.

Before we get confused, it’s important to understand that powder shampoo is not the same as dry shampoo (which is an easy mistake to make based on first impressions).

Unlike dry shampoo, powder shampoo is a water-activated version of your normal shampoo, with added environmental and health benefits!

The Powder Shampoo products that I’ve tried and tested are part of The Powder Shampoo’s Eco Escapades range.

I specifically managed to get my hands on the ‘Trust The Flow’ set which includes 2 powder shampoos and 1 powder foam body wash.

To be more specific, the 3 eco-friendly products included in this set are:

  • Strengthening Powder Shampoo (20g)
  • Invigorating Powder Shampoo (20g)
  • Energising Body Foam Wash (20g)

By testing out one of the boxes from the Eco Escapades range, I was able to try out quite a few of this company’s products at once. This means I feel confident in sharing my honest opinion of whether switching to powder shampoos and foam body wash is truly worth it.

If you want to find out the benefits of powder shampoo and how it may be the latest eco-friendly beauty product you need in 2025 then keep on reading!

What Makes Powder Shampoo So Special?

Eco-Friendly Benefits

As an avid backpacker who tries to make sustainable choices where possible, I immediately noticed that The Powder Shampoo brand solved several pain points with its simple yet extremely innovative products.

Not only does the company promise to put the ‘planet first’ in everything that they do, they actually mean it!

Their products are vegan and cruelty-free, and their packaging is 100% plastic-free too.

Even more importantly, they don’t use any water in the production of their products, hence the ‘powdered’ characteristics of their shampoos and body washes.

All these efforts combined, contribute toward the conversation of the planet’s environment.

Better yet, if you wanted to purchase one of their products, The Powder Shampoo will plant a tree for each item to help offset global carbon emissions… pretty mindblowing right?

It’s rare to see companies nowadays that genuinely care about leaving the world in a better place than they found it. I think that’s part of what makes The Powder Shampoo so special!

Health Benefits

If you know me, you’ll know that I’m all about finding sustainable products that reduce the amount of harmful toxins in my daily life.

In my efforts to do so, I’ve been testing out various natural deodorants and even other natural shampoos! Therefore I consider myself pretty qualified when it comes to reviewing eco-friendly powder shampoos…

What I love about these products is the fact that they do not contain any irritating sulphates, parabens or other nasty chemicals in their formula.

They only use plant-derived products, including a whopping 28 different essential oils across their entire product range!

This turns any shower into a luxurious spa experience, which if you’re an experienced backpacker, you’ll know can be a rarity!

You’ll also notice the mood-enhancing properties of using essential oils on a daily basis.

For instance, I absolutely loved the smell of lemongrass from the energising powder foam wash. It has become my secret weapon that helps me wake up and mentally prepare for a busy day ahead!

It’s even kind on your purse strings

If you’re also looking for a cost-efficient shampoo then powder shampoo may be the way forward.

A 100g bottle promises 100 washes, making it a cost-effective alternative to your regular shampoo!

No Stress When Packing

Powder shampoo is revolutionary in the travelling/ backpacking world thanks to its non-liquid formula.

Most frequent travellers will recall a time when they open their luggage and see that the contents of their shampoo or body wash have spilt all over their clothes during transit.

However, with powder shampoo, there’s no need to worry since it will only lather when it comes into contact with water!

This means you can pack your bag without fearing what mess you might face when you reach your destination.

Saves on space in your liquid bag

This is particularly handy if you’re like me and struggle to fit all your toiletries into the tiny liquid bag when I’m flying without checked luggage.

The powdered formula means you can keep the product separate, saving you space and helping you to avoid throwing away your favourite products when going through airport security.

My honest review of The Powder Shampoo products

I’ve decided to structure this review into three parts: product packaging and first impressions, application and experience, and finally, the results I got from using the products.

Product packaging and first impressions

First and foremost I was blown away by the effort The Powder Shampoo put into their packaging.

I love the fact that each Eco Escapades set is inspired by a popular travel destination and how each location is incorporated into the design of their unique boxes.

The ‘Trust The Flow’ set I tested uses the Veneto region of Italy as its source of inspiration. I found the packaging design so cute and I especially liked the image of the traditional gondola on the front!

The product bottles themselves are quite minimalist in design, and add a pretty pop of colour to any bathroom. When lined up next to each other, they look very aesthetically pleasing, which is a huge bonus for me!

I was also extremely pleased with how good each bottle smelled! The fact that they did not have a synthetic-like scent, makes them even more appealing since I know I’m not about to wash my hair with harsh chemicals that I’ve been already trying to avoid.

Application and experience

I was at first a little daunted by the thought of powder shampoo, simply because I’d never used it before.

But when I looked at the instructions, I was relieved to see how easy the process is.

You simply wet your hair and palms in the shower, sprinkle some product into your hands, and then rub them together to create a foam before applying to your hair (or body if using the body wash of course!).

For my first ever time using powdered hair care products, I opted for the strengthening shampoo followed by the energising powder foam wash.

I found that the shampoo needed slightly more water to lather and foam than the body wash, and I added an extra sprinkle of shampoo just to make sure it covered my long hair.

By habit, I always shampoo twice (as instructed by my hairdresser) so I did the same with this product.

Like my other natural shampoo, my hair lathered up much more the second time around. My guess is that the product had cleaned the oils out of my hair after the first wash, so could foam up much more easily the second time.

The shower itself smelled amazing, I love how the combination of the essential oils with the shower steam creates a spa-like experience within minutes.

It’s important to note that you need to replace the lid straight away or position the bottles out of the way of water if left open to avoid the after getting inside since the holes are quite big. You don’t want to end up using the entire product in one sitting after all!

This is only a small thing to note but I still thought it would be useful to mention!

The results

The most important section of my review… the results!

Overall, my hair felt and looked just as clean as the other natural shampoo I use regularly. My hair was rejuvenated and felt like it had volume, which is important to me as my hair is quite thin and therefore can appear flat and lifeless if I’m not careful!

Two days after washing, I found that my hair was not as oily as usual. I’m not sure if this is a coincidence, this is merely just something I’ve observed at this point so I cannot say that this is a result of using The Powder Shampoo for definite yet.

However, if this is the case, this result is a huge win for me since my busy schedule makes washing my hair every other day a big inconvenience. Going forward I’ll continue using The Powder Shampoo to see if this will benefit my hair-washing regime in the long run! (I will be reporting back of course!)

One surprising thing I noticed after using the products was that my hair did not smell as strong of the essential oils as I expected. Depending on your personal preference, this may be a more or less ideal attribute.

However, this wouldn’t put me off using these products again since my hair still smelled fresh and clean after it had dried!

As a 100% plant-derived product from a company with outstanding ethical values, these powder shampoos and body washes are perfect for eco-conscious buyers.

Since The Powder Shampoo does not contain any sulphates or parabens in its formulas, I also recommend these products to anyone who is seeking opportunities to reduce harmful toxins in their everyday lives.

Finally, these handy waterless shampoos and body washes are perfect for frequent travellers of all kinds. Not only do they save you money in the long run, but they also save space and -most importantly- stop any unfortunate messes from taking place while your luggage is being transported.

You’ll also reduce the impact of your footprint from your travels by swapping out your water-based shampoos for these environmentally friendly options!

FAQs

What is powder shampoo, and how is it different from dry shampoo?

Powder shampoo is an eco-friendly shampoo alternative that requires water to ‘activate’ and lather into a foam. Just like regular shampoo, it is designed to cleanse your scalp and hair by removing oil, dirt and build-up.

Dry shampoo is a water-less hair product that is designed to absorb oil and refresh the appearance of your hair without washing it. However, unlike powder shampoo, it does not properly clean your hair and scalp and is only a temporary fix.

How long does a bottle of The Powder shampoo last?

A 100g bottle of The Powder Shampoo lasts up to 100 washes. If you’re looking to test out the product, you can get a smaller 20g bottle that will give you 20 washes!

Is powder shampoo safe for coloured or treated hair?

Yes, The Powder Shampoo has two formulas that are great for coloured hair! You can choose between the Strengthening & Soothing Powder Shampoo or Hydrating & Replenishing Powder Shampoo depending on your hair goals.

Who is The Powder Shampoo ideal for?

The Powder Shampoo products are best for eco-conscious buyers or anyone who is seeking to reduce plastic waste and harmful toxins in their daily lives. The lightweight packaging and powdered contents also make this a great sustainable product for all travel lovers.

Final Thoughts: Is Powder Shampoo worth it?

In my opinion, if you’re serious about making a change and choosing high-quality eco-friendly shampoo over traditional products then I cannot recommend The Powder Shampoo enough.

The benefits to your health, as well as the environment, outweigh any initial reservations you may have about this latest innovative beauty product.

I also want to highlight the convenience of these lightweight powdered formulas, which are perfect for frequent travellers.

I only wish I had known about them before I embarked on my previous backpacking adventures! However, I can safely say that they will become a staple item in my packing list for my next adventures!

After trying out their products myself, I truly believe The Powder Shampoo’s popularity will increase immensely over the upcoming years. I would not speak so highly of them if I didn’t!

So why not stay ahead of the hype and check out their incredible products? Remember using my code ‘JODIE’ will get you a small discount too!

Don’t forget to let me know if you manage to get your hands on any of The Powder Shampoo’s products, I’d love to hear what you think.
