What To Do During The Winter Season in Thailand 2025

winter in thailand activities

Winter is undoubtedly the best time to travel in Thailand. From November, the monsoon season comes to an end and the perfect tropical conditions that every traveller desires take hold.

However, with Thailand’s hot and sunny winter days comes an influx of tourists who are actively avoiding their home country’s frozen winters. This also makes this time of year the busiest season for Thailand.

In this post, you’ll learn everything you need to know when booking a winter getaway to Thailand. You’ll discover the best activities to do, what you need to pack as well as valuable tips based on my own experience staying in Thailand over the winter months.

Thailand’s Winter Weather Overview: What To Expect

Temperature and Climate

For those wondering, the winter months in Thailand are between November and February.

Although the climate is relatively pleasant all year round, the weather during this particular period is characterized by exotic heat and sunny days, without the unbearable humidity which prevails at other times of the year.

This leaves no guesswork as to why so many tourists fly overseas to Thailand for the winter!

Temperatures between November and April range between 29°C and 33°C (84°F and 91°F). Initially, this may seem quite high for some. However, when compared with temperatures recorded during Thailand’s hottest month of April ( 40°C/104°F), this seems like a reasonable compromise!

Regional Differences in Weather

Fortunately, Thailand is a large country, so due to regional differences in climate, you can decide how intense the heat you’d like to experience.

For those who would prefer cooler temperatures, then heading north to Chiang Mai or Pai is your best bet. The evenings in these destinations will be much cooler, allowing you to take a break from the day’s heat.

In Central Thailand which includes Bangkok and Pattaya, expect milder conditions. This leaves the South of Thailand, including its islands, to be the country’s warmest region, so if you’re planning to head here, ensure you are well prepared with sun protection!

Rainfall

As I’ve briefly mentioned, the winter months in Thailand have very minimal rainfall compared to its other seasons.

However, for travellers wanting to visit Thailand’s stunning islands, it’s worth noting that the islands that are located on the eastern coast of the Gulf of Thailand experience heavy rain until December.

Therefore, if you’re planning to stop on one (or a few) islands during November or December, I recommend heading to the incredible islands on the western coast of Thailand such as Koh Phi Phi, Phuket, or Koh Lanta!

Best Time for Outdoor Activities

Between November and April, the weather conditions are perfect for those looking to get stuck into all the awesome outdoor adventures that Thailand has to offer!

Since the winter months are relatively cooler and dry, activities such as hiking, trekking, and exploring Thailand’s spectacular National Parks become a much more enjoyable experience without the intense summer heat.

If you desire a more laidback trip then you’re also in luck. These ideal conditions ensure that your beach days go uninterrupted by torrential rain and promise calmer seas to bathe or snorkel in all day!

Busy Season Considerations

Since this time of year is also Thailand’s peak tourist season, I cannot express the importance of booking accommodation or activities that you’d like to do in advance to avoid any disappointment.

This unfortunately happened to a friend of mine, who had initially planned to stay in Koh Tao in February this year, only to find that there were literally no affordable accommodation options available. Trust me- it really does get that busy during Thailand’s peak season!

Top Activities to Experience During Winter in Thailand

Explore Thailand’s National Parks

The winter season is the best time to explore Thailand’s incredible and world-famous National Parks!

The reasoning behind this is primarily due to the cooler temperatures, making jungle trekking much more pleasant- and in all honesty- A LOT more bearable (if you’ve trekked in the heat of Thailand’s summer, you’d agree!).

Following monsoon season, national parks are revived, making this one of the best opportunities to stand in awe of the lush green landscapes, prosperous waterfalls, and bustling wildlife activity.

Doi Inthanon, Khao Yai, and Khao Sok are particularly popular parks visited by tourists during Thailand’s winter months and are great eco-friendly ways to appreciate the country’s natural beauty.

Doi Inthanon promises spectacular misty mornings that create breathtaking views of the park during sunrise. Since this park is located in the North of Thailand, it’s also a great place to escape the heat and enjoy cooler evenings.

If you can, I recommend visiting this national park from late January to February. The Siamese sakura (wild Himalyian cherry) is due to begin blossoming during this period!

Visit Thailand’s Beautiful Beaches

One of my favourite parts of living in Thailand is the wide array of beautiful beaches across its incredible island portfolio.

Each island almost had its own ‘personality’, which is characterised by the unique offering of activities and way of life adopted by the local community.

For example, Koh Phi Phi is much more of a party destination for backpackers, while Koh Tao attracts scuba diving enthusiasts from all over the world.

However, no matter which island you visit, a spectacular beach will be waiting for you so you can spend a day in a true tropical paradise wherever you choose!

The ideal weather conditions during winter mean long sunny days with minimal rainy intervals. This also almost guarantees calmer sea conditions.

Take advantage of this by exploring the vibrant undersea world while snorkelling or scuba diving- I promise you won’t be disappointed!

You can find my recommendations for scuba diving schools in Thailand, as well as tips on how to make this activity as environmentally friendly as possible in my post: Eco-Friendly Travel in Thailand for Backpackers [2024]

Many tourists head to the South of Thailand during the winter months, so you can bet that the atmosphere on each island will be lively. If you’re a social butterfly, this makes the numerous beach events held during this time particularly enjoyable.

Yi Peng and Loy Krathong Festivals

If you are planning a trip north to the popular city of Chiang Mai during November then you cannot miss out on the Yi Peng and Loy Krathong festivals!

Despite being two distinct festivals, they both take place to show ‘thanks’ and to honour Buddha.

To demonstrate their gratitude during Loy Krathon, locals create little baskets filled with candles, flowers, and sometimes a few coins. They then let these baskets flow down the river.

In the case of Yi Peng, lanterns are released into the night sky, with the bright full moon (the 12th moon of the Thai lunar calendar) to acknowledge a path to a brighter future ahead.

Both of these festivals sound incredible, right? Now imagine witnessing them both together!

This is possible since Yi Peng and Loy Krathong usually overlap, thus creating a thrilling and mindblowing spectacle. This truly is a bucket list experience!

In 2025, Loy Krathong and Yi Peng festivals take place from Friday 5th November till Saturday 6th November. Loy Krathong specifically takes place on the Friday.

To immerse yourself fully into these festivals, you should purchase a ticket from the Yi Peng Chiang Mai Lantern Festival website. This includes a wide range of packages at various prices, so you can choose the one most suitable for you!

Koh Phangan’s Full Moon Party 2025

The Full Moon Party which takes place every full moon is a huge celebration that takes place on the Southeastern island of Koh Phangan.

This party is HUGE, with over 30,000 backpackers and nomads all flocking to dance, sing, and drink on the beach under the light of the full moon.

Upcoming dates for the full moon party this year (2025) are:

  • 13th/14th January
  • 13th February
  • 13th/14th March
  • 12th/13th April
  • 12th May
  • 10/11th June
  • 12th July
  • 9th August
  • 7th September
  • 8th October
  • 5th November
  • 5th December
  • 31st December

This year, the full moon party will also take place on New Year’s Eve so if you’re looking for a huge party to celebrate the start of 2026, then Koh Phangan is the place to be!

Entry is around 200 Baht and can be bought once you’re on the island. However, make sure you book accommodation WELL in advance to avoid ridiculously high prices or even worse, no accommodation at all!

The Full Moon and the smaller yet popular Half Moon Party can be extremely busy. Therefore, make sure you’re careful and stay safe especially if you’re planning on drinking.

Keep your drinks covered and with you at all times. Unfortunately as a backpacker, you still need to be alert even when you’re dancing the rest of your troubles away!

Go to a Thai Cooking Class

Cooking classes are the perfect souvenir and are extremely fun activities you can do, no matter the weather!

It may seem strange to include Thai Cooking Classes as one of the activities to do during winter in Thailand but hear me out…

Cooking classes are a great cultural activity you can do to escape the heat when it inevitably becomes a little too much.

Besides, you really cannot visit Thailand without learning how to cook at least one of their mouthwatering traditional dishes!

If you find yourself in Chiang Mai, check out this Thai cooking class that uses organic ingredients and lets you pick out your ingredients at a local market!

What to Pack for Winter in Thailand

Clothing Essentials

Packing for the winter season in Thailand doesn’t need to be complicated. Aiming for at least a week’s worth of vest/ light tops, a couple of pairs of shorts/ skirts, a pair of long pants, a baggy tee, and a hoody is a great foundation for any packing list! Anything else you bring can be considered a bonus.

Due to the heat, you’ll spend the majority of your time in loose-fitting clothing to help you stay cool. However, during overnight journeys (such as plane or sleeper-bus trips) you may find yourself wanting slightly more layers because it can get pretty cold!

This may also be the case if you’re spending some time in the north of Thailand. The days are still warm however when the sun sets, the evenings can be a dramatic change for those adapted to higher temperatures. It’s better to be safe than sorry!

Travel Accessories

My number one travel accessory isn’t anything cool or mildly exciting. But when I say this purchase made the biggest difference to my travelling journey, I’m not exaggerating!

My top travel accessory/ travel hack is packing cubes! These are great for organising your suitcase or backpack.

These packing cubes helped me stay organised, meaning I lost A LOT LESS than I expected. So if you’re a bit of an unorganised or forgetful backpacker like me, I cannot recommend these enough!

Other travel accessories that I always have on me are a universal travel adapter and a good portable charger. These both have saved me from some otherwise extremely sticky situations!

🧳For more help on what to pack when heading to Southeast Asia, you can check out my Complete No-Nonsense Packing Guide here.

Cultural Considerations

It’s inevitable that you’ll be checking out at least one of Thailand’s sacred temples, or maybe even heading to one of their cultural festivals like Yi Peng or Loy Krathong!

This means you’ll need to ensure you have some appropriate clothing for when you head out to these destinations.

The best practice is to cover your knees and shoulders when entering places of religious, spiritual, or cultural significance to show your respect.

I usually wear a baggy t-shirt and flowy pants for comfort (yes, this is your chance to finally get your hands on the classic elephant travellers pants).

Travel tips specifically for winter in Thailand

Best Time to Visit Popular Destinations In Thailand

The following table indicates the best time to visit each location during the winter period. This takes into account weather conditions and significant events that are great for tourists!

DestinationBest winter month(s) to visit
BangkokNovember, December, January and February
Chiang Mai/ PaiNovember, December, January and February
Koh Tao/ Koh Phangan/ Koh SamuiJanuary and February
Phuket/ Krabi/ Koh Phi PhiNovember, December, January and February

Accommodation and Transportation

Book your accommodation in advance if you’re heading to destinations that you know will be popular.

For example, Koh Tao gets extremely busy before and after the full moon party (which takes place on its neighbour Koh Phangan island). This is because backpackers tend to visit Koh Tao before or immediately after the monthly event.

Therefore, use websites such as Booking.com to find a place to stay so you don’t miss out on staying on the island altogether!

Transportation-wise, there’s less to worry about. We would book journeys just a few days before and would be absolutely fine finding suitable transport.

However, if you are sticking to a

tight schedule or just prefer to be more organised, then why not book in advance too?

When I’m looking for good prices, I either use local transportation companies (make sure you barter for the best price) or I use 12Go when booking online!

I explain more about how to barter (‘haggle’) in this post here: 35 Useful Thai Phrases For Backpackers (Includes Pronunciation!)

Health and Safety

My top health and safety tips when travelling in Thailand include:

  • Use mosquito repellent (the mosquitos out there are no joke)
  • Keep applying suncream and stay hydrated (the sun can be strong in winter months)
  • Be cautious when participating in outdoor activities- follow the instructions of your guide and stick to local guidelines (also check if your travel insurance policy covers you for this activity)
